ASHRAE Honors Columbia Engineer as New Fellow ORLANDO - The American Society of Heating, Refrigerating and Air-Conditioning Engineers (ASHRAE) elevated Lawrence J. Schoen, P.E., to the grade of Fellow at the Society's 2005 Winter Meeting held February 5-9. Fellow ASHRAE is a membership grade that recognizes distinction in the arts and sciences of environmental technology and is earned through achievement as a researcher, designer, educator or engineering executive. Approximately 500 of ASHRAE's 55,000 members are Fellows. Schoen is president, Schoen Engineering Inc., Columbia, MD. He has been a designer, manager and construction coordinator on many large development projects for rehabilitation requiring innovative energy recovery and conservative measures. After Hurricane Andrew in 1992, Schoen directed onsite engineering and rehabilitation systems in the Miami area, restoring essential buildings that were the first to provide supplies to affected areas. As project manager and lead engineer for an energy project at five U. S. Army bases, Schoen was involved in the largest energy services performance contract. This involved $ 20 million in energy improvements and was part of a major effort to improve the quality of life for military personnel. His work also has contributed to improvement of indoor air quality, notably through his service on ASHRAE Standard 62 committee, which he now co-chairs. ASHRAE, founded in 1894, is an international organization of 55,000 persons. Its sole objective is to advance through research, standards writing, publishing and continuing education the arts and sciences of heating, ventilation, air conditioning and refrigeration to serve the evolving needs of the public.
