PES Program: Ductwork Leakage
Testing and Design

Controlling and determining HVAC air duct leakage requires knowledge of duct construction techniques and how they relate to setting air duct leakage limits that are attainable. The seminar will cover the practical relationship of air duct leakage to duct surface area using both the ASHRAE Fundamentals Handbook and SMACNA HVAC Air Duct Leakage Test Manual. The newly proposed ASHRAE Method of Test for Air Leakage in Equipment will also be introduced.

Duct design is an important aspect that affects air system performance; it must take into account cost effectiveness, acoustics, duct construction, and duct leakage. We will discuss duct design considerations and how to enhance overall system/energy performance of air distribution systems.

Speakers:

Mark Terzigni
Project Manager Technical Resources
SMACNA

As a Project Manager, Mark Terzigni works with others in the Technical Resources Department to help develop and publish the technical manuals produced by SMACNA as well as providing interpretations to SMANCA standards through the Technical Inquiry process.

Industry Involvement:

  • Member of ASHRAE, National Capitol Chapter
  • ASHRAE Technical Committee 5.2 Duct Design
  • ASHRAE Technical Committee 7.9 Commissioning

Prior to joining SMACNA, Mark was a Regional Engineer for McGill AirFlow LLC assisting the sales staff, customers, and design professionals with technical issues regarding duct construction, duct design, sound attenuation, and leak testing equipment. Prior to his role as a Regional Engineer Mark was a Sales Engineer for McGill, and his territories included parts of Michigan, Ohio, and West Virginia. He was involved in several overseas projects including the American Embassy in Germany and a production facility for IBM in Ireland.

Mr. Terzigni graduated from The Ohio State University with a Bachelors of Science in Mechanical Engineering.
