PES Program: Smoke Control Systems

Smoke control systems often involve a number of disciplines in its successful design and implementation including fire protection, fire alarm, mechanical, architectural, electrical and security. Mr. Kampmeyer will present the "What, Why and How" of smoke control systems. He will introduce the basic methods of smoke control; review the Code requirements as they relate to design, installation and testing; and, present lessons learned from his many years in the industry and from his forensics and expert witness experience.

Mr. Kampmeyer has 47 years experience in fire protection, HVAC, and mechanical engineering
consulting and design for industrial, petrochemical, commercial, residential, and governmental
facilities. The majority of this work has been in existing facilities involving analysis, redesign, and conversion of existing systems for new uses and/or improved operation.

He has designed fire protection systems for the Philadelphia Regional Port Authority; fire alarm and standpipe systems for numerous high rise buildings in Philadelphia; and, performed testing and inspection of smoke management systems for University of Pennsylvania, Merck, the Curtis Building, Greystone Park Hospital, Ramapo College, Garden State Plaza Mall and Montclair State University to name a few. In addition, he serves as a consultant on fire protection issues for the Voorhees Twp., NJ Code Office and performs forensic work that involves analyzing, preparing reports, giving depositions and testifying at trials on failures.

He has developed and teaches International Codes, fire protection and smoke management courses for Drexel University - his alma mater where he received both Bachelor and Master of Science Degrees in Mechanical Engineering, the City of Philadelphia, the Philadelphia Engineers Club, ASHRAE, SFPE and ASSE.

Mr. Kampmeyer is a Fellow of both ASHRAE and NSPE and a member of NFPA, SFPE, ASME and ICC. In particular, his NFPA activities include the Smoke Management Committee - NFPA 92A & B Subcommittees, Technical Correlating Committee, and Technical Committee on Commissioning; Editor of Section 18.05 of The NFPA Fire Protection Handbook, 20th Edition; and, Chairman - AEBO Section.
