October President's Corner

"Wow", was the expression that was heard many times during our first meeting on September 10th! The attendance was the most we have seen for a non-joint meeting and we have to thank all of you who joined us. A special thanks goes to our speakers, Mark Terzigni, Eli Howard and Dr. Andrew Persily. Mark and Eli presented the PES program on Ductwork leakage, testing and design. The program received excellent evaluations from the attendees. The program will be available for viewing on our website.

Following the PES program, we joined the rest of the NCC members for our Dinner Program. The speaker, Dr. Andrew Persily, Vice President of ASHRAE, discussed the development of ASHRAE's Indoor Air Quality Guide. Many found the presentation very enlightening, concerning the process and development of these guides. We were also very fortunate to have Dr. Persily take some time to discuss the importance of ASHRAE and the significant contributions we all can make.

I would also like to thank Jason Smith, committee chair for ASHRAE Membership, who spoke about what our members are doing in the industry. It was a very inspiring speech where he described our role as leaders of a critical industry, the pace setters and the standard bearers! We have continued to grow our Chapter in membership due to Jason's continued hard work.
Our October 8th meeting is one that I personally will be looking forward to. We will have the opportunity to thank those Committee Chairs, Governors and Officers from the 2007-2008 year and acknowledge the members who received awards from our region.

The October PES session will address the topic of Air Filtration on thee levels. The first will focus on particulate filtration with The Technology of Clean Air presented by Alan Veeck with the National Air Filtration association. The second part will focus on Gas-Phase Filtration with ASHRAE Distinguished Lecturer Chris Muller presenting Gas-Phase Filtration: Single Media or Multiple Media Systems: Which should be used for IAQ Applications? The third presentation will address Chemical, Biological, Radiological and Nuclear Filtration and will be presented by Dr. David Friday, Director or Research and Development at the Guild Associates.

The Dinner Program for October will feature Kevin Morin, a past president of the National Capital Chapter! He will be discussing "Energy & Water Savings with Cooling Tower Systems". With over 20 years of experience with heat rejection applications, this will be a "Don't Miss" program.

Don't forget to pre-register for these two informative programs by October the 4th!

Best Regards,
Jim Grant
NCC President - 2008-2009
